RTX 2060 vs RTX 2070 Gaming Laptops

Well, we are again faced with the question of which is better. This time it’s about the graphics card in your gaming laptop. If you are a gaming freak you know very well, the importance of a good graphics card in a good gaming laptop. The two most widely used GPU models in gaming laptops are RTX 2060 and RTX 2070. We will see and try to compare them both, so you guys can make up your mind about which one to buy or which one is better. So, let us get right into it.

Specifications:

First, we will try to compare the technical specifications of both GPU models. There are some similarities between the two. Both RTX 2060 and RTX 2070 are based on same GPU architecture TU106, and both support Direct X 12.

OpenGL 4.5 along with, Vulkan, GPU Boost, Nvidia Ansel and G-Sync are supported by both RTX 2060 and 2070. Both the cards are ready for the VR gameplay. The performance of VR games on both these cards is great and smooth, which can be enjoyed with ease. There is a slight difference in Tensor Cores. RTX 2070 has 288 whereas 2060 has 240.

Even though both cards are different in quite some ways, and RTX 2070 is a relatively powerful card but still, the power consumption of both cards is almost same. RTX 2070 has a TDP of 175W, whereas 2060 has a TDP of 160W. This means both the cards can run on a 500W PSU if required.

IF we look at RTX 2070 it has 2034 shader units. It has 256-bit memory bus, 8GB GDDR6 and 64 ROPs. It is equipped with two versions of TGP. One is 80W and one is 90W. The base and boost frequencies of 80W variant is 885 MHz/ 1185 MHz, whereas the base and boost frequency of 90W variant is 1080 MHz / 1305 MHz. For both 80W and 90W versions, the memory clock is 12000MHz.

Now coming to RTX 2060, it has got 1920 shader units along with 192bit memory bus, 48 ROPs and 6GB GDDR6 memory. It is equipped with 90W TGP and has the base and boost frequencies of 960MHz / 1200MHz. For memory it has 14000MHz.

To compare both of these, we can say that RTX 2060 has a high memory and core frequencies. The TGP also seems high and this GPU will certainly not fall under heavy loads.

RTX 2070 on the other hand has more ROPs, more shaders, more video-memory and a wide memory bus.

Gaming Performance:

Gaming Performance

Well, we talked about the technical specifications of both GPUs. But now, let us get these both bad boys inside the battle zone. The original test for both RTX 2060 and RTX 2070 would be while playing high end games, on some of the best RTX gaming laptops. In most of the high-end and high-graphic games the the RTX 2070 has more fps on Full HD normal, high, and ultra, display than RTX 2060. If we test these GPUs on some of the best games we can find out that the fps performance of RTX 2070 at Full HD normal is 19 %, at HD high is 16 % and at HD ultra is 8% more than RTX 2060.

Comparison of Performance:

Comparison

While we see the gameplay on the screen of RTX gaming laptops, the difference won’t seem so evident. The graphics and resolution might seem same. But if we look at the stats of these gaming performance, we would be able to find out the difference.

Let’s start with Far Cry 5. When played on the RTX 2070, it gave the performance of 108 fps on the normal HD, whereas it gave the fps of 100 and 93 at high and ultra HD respectively. But what happened when this game was played on the RTX 2060? The fps at normal HD, high HD and ultra HD was 84, 81 and 77 fps respectively, which was quite less as compared to the performance of RTX 2070

Why not try another game. Let’s check the stats on everyone’s favourite game Rise of The Tomb Raider. The fps performance of RTX 2070 was 134, 70 and 45 at normal, high, and ultra HD respectively. On the other-hand, the performance on RTX 2060 was 106, 67 and 48 fps. It can be easily seen that the performance of RTX 2070 is better than that of RTX 2060.

Price:

Well, there is a huge price difference between RTX 2070 and RTX 2060 GPUs. Obviously the RTX 2070 is more expensive, as it provides more quality to the gaming. Keep in mind that the performance of both GPUs is almost the same, until you reach resolutions higher than 1080p. If you are a die-hard gamer, who games on 1440p resolutions on a gaming monitor with crazy refresh rate, then RTX 2070 is the best choice for you. But if you don’t mind gaming at 1080p resolutions, then the RTX 2060 will also give the same results as the 2070 GPU. So, if you think about the performance and cost efficiency RTX 2060 would do great for you.

Conclusion:

Keeping in mind all the technical specifications, a gaming laptop with RTX 2070 is much better than 2060. It can perform well and gives highly efficient performance, even at the 1440p resolutions. RTX 2060 on the other-hand, is also great in performance. It can give the same results as 2070 if games are played within 1080p resolutions. But if we look at the price difference between both, it is quite a lot. So, both have their own place in the gaming world. It is solely up to your preference which one to buy. If you can enjoy your gaming at 1080p, you can enjoy RTX 2060 which would also be affordable and at a reasonable price. But, if you don’t want to compromise your gaming experience even a little, then RTX 2070 powered gaming laptop is the best fit for you. We hope you guys have made your mind.
